Week 20 - The Solution to Our Problems

Happy weekend all! Hope everyone has had a good week!

This week has been a little more interesting than the last. I had some solid inviting time this week as well. It's nice to be able to get away from office work sometimes, that way I'm not always stuck in the office.

To start this week off, we had interviews with the mission president on Monday with our district. It's always nice having president around because he is a funny man. He always brings a good atmosphere to the building that we all really enjoy.

Saw an old arcade machine while I was at the barber shop.  Thought it was pretty cool.

Closer picture... obviously I didn't play it!

I can't believe that this transfer is already almost over. I feel like I've been in the office for 2 weeks but it's been like 4 weeks. This upcoming transfer we have a lot of missionaries coming in again. I think about 17-18. That means that half of the mission will be training or being trained!

On Wednesday there were more interviews that were being held in the office so we had to set up for those. The assistants played a prank on some elders a week back and those elders happened to be in the office that day for interviews. Conveniently the assistants were also on exchange and their flat here was left unattended. I think you can guess the rest. Yes, that's right. They pranked them back as well and boy was it funny!

Thursday was a self-reliance meeting. Only missionaries that have 6 months left on their mission go to this. They are told about all the skills that they have developed while here on their mission and then they are taught how they can also apply this skill to their lives back home once they return from their mission. We were tasked with making sure that all the technology worked fine before the meeting. We didn't have any complaints so I think it all went well!

Friday, oh Friday! That was a good day! We went on exchanges with our zone leaders! Guess what that means? We got to go proselyting! So this past zone conference, our mission president invited us to have at least 10 contacts a day, and as we do that, he promised us that our results would double. And amazingly these past few weeks, our results have almost doubled! It really is just a witness to me that the mission president does receive revelation for the mission! Anyway, the zone leader that I was companions with [Elder Farar (pronounced "Far")], we managed to get 17 contacts that day. Now a contact is basic. It's just to teach a principle, testify of that principle, and then to invite them to do something that will bring them to Jesus Christ. Among those 17 contacts, we only made one friend (got their contact info as well as a return appointment). We also got 5 other's contact info. It feels really nice to be able to go out and teach others. I think next week we might have another exchange, so I'm really looking forward to it.

This past week I was reading in the war chapters of the book of Mormon again. Like I said before, there is a lot of good things that you can learn from these chapters no matter how barbaric they may seem at first glance. I was reading in Alma 43. Now at this time, the Zoramites and Lamanites wanted to take over the Nephites which would mean that they would lose their liberty and freedom. The Nephites knew that this was coming so they called a leader and his name was Captain Moroni. He was a righteous and just man in the eyes of the Lord. They decided to make preparations to defend themsleves against the Lamanite attacks by making armor and all sorts of protection. They also knew that the Lamanites would attack the people of Jershon considering that they were Lamanites that had changed their belief and became part of the Nephites. So the Nephites meet the Lamanites in battle in Jershon and ended up with the Lamanites retreating and deciding to go attack a different city thinking it wouldn't be secure. Little did they know that Moroni had sent out spies to watch their movements. Interestingly enough, he also asked Alma (one of the prophets) to inquire of God to know the movements of the Lamanites. Because of this, he was also able to fortify the right cities, defend against their attacks and send the Lamanite back to their own land.

There is a very good lesson that we can learn from this. The lesson being that, not only should we seek to solve a problem ourselves, but we should also seek counsel from the Lord. Moroni first acts and then he seeks the Lord. I think that this pattern is also relevant in our day. We should act to find solutions to our problems first and then take it to the Lord as it shows that we are really trying and have faith that He can help us out with the right solutions. There is always works that needs to be done before results are shown. We can tell ourselves that we are going to be really good at a musical instrument, but if we don't put in the effort, it is never going to happen.

The gospel is the same way.

"For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man."

As we see in this verse it is WORK and then GLORY as a result of the work. It's not GLORY then the WORK.

I know that as we diligently put forth the effort and seek for God's help, we will receive it.

Love you all,

Cheers,

Elder Jakob
