Hello all! I wish you a Happy New Year from England! What a beautiful place this is. The only thing that I missed this Christmas season was the snow. I feel you need snow for it to be truly Christmas. It only rained here, so I never saw any.
So right after last week's email.... let's just say things got interesting. Thursday (Boxing Day) we drove up to Birmingham for a Mission Leadership Council (where all the zone leaders, sister training leaders counsel with the mission president and the assistants on how we can help the missionaries in the mission). We didn't have anything to eat all day until we got the mission office that night and ate some food. I went to bed that night and woke up several times in the night feeling nasty. When I woke up in the morning, I really didn't feel good at all. So long story short, I got food poisoning and was stuck in bed all day vomiting.... Needless to say, I did not join the council and it was not much fun. I did get better though. I had to stay the night at the office again and drive back in the morning. I was a lot better than the day before so it all worked out.
Monday was sweet. We went inviting in Dorchester! And we found 2 families to teach! It's so cool! We also visited a member that can't come to church because of health reasons, and felt lonely. We are going to meet with him more often. His name is John and he is an amazing artist! His drawings are so realistic and captivating. He also lives in this place called Poundbury. I don't really know how to describe this place, but I guess maybe "posh" will do. The architecture is very different from what you will see in the surrounding areas. Apparently, this land is owned by the Prince of Wales and he authorized them to build on it. The Prince wanted different style houses though because he didn't like the traditional British home. So I guess that is why it looks so different. It's a really intriguing place though!
Tuesday, we had exchanges with one of the district leaders in the Zone. The district leader's companion, Elder Richards and I went together for the day. We ended up going to this place called Glastonbury... now this is such an odd place! There were "magical shops" everywhere (that's what the signs said). Every person we ended up having a conversation with there talked about this book that was in all the shops... and that they were having "visions" while reading it... honestly, I don't know what to think... haha! But needless to say it was very interesting! After inviting there we drove to get some Chinese take away and the had a blast on New Years Eve.
Yeah, so that's pretty much what happened this week.
I guess to end off, I will share something I've been studying this week. As zone leaders, my companion and I felt that we should have something to work towards, a vision statement to say. Proverbs teaches us "Where there is no vision, the people perish[.]" (Proverbs 29:18) So we decided that we would set a goal that the zone should work towards and that goal was to become more like Jesus Christ by studying a Christ-like attribute each week and applying it. The whole reason why we have come to this earth, is to learn and grow. What better way to do that than to follow the perfect example of Jesus Jesus Christ. He is the way back, and if we follow His example --meaning becoming like Him-- we are promised exaltation. This week the Zone is studying virtue, and how fitting too. It being the week of the new year, the time of year that most people want to change. Everything starts with a thought. If we want to become better, it all starts with a thought that we have which leads to an action. Virtue is the act of keeping your thoughts clean and pure. As we strive to keep our minds focused on that which is good, we are virtuous, and in turn, our actions become pure. I have found that as I try to become more virtuous, I can concentrate in doing the Lord's will, I can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost more, and ultimately have better intentions for those around me. I invite all of you reading to ponder about a Christ-like attribute that you may be struggling with and study and apply it in your life. I promise that as you do, you will see great blessings and receive a fuller joy.
Thank you to all reading. I'm praying for you all!
Cheers,
Elder Jakob
