Week 6 - Surprises and Sunday Roast Beef Dinner

Hello to all of you!

So over here in England, they have a drink called "Squash," and my first week out, I filled up a whole glass and just chugged it. Oh boy, that was a bad idea! It turns out that it's a concentrated syrup and you are supposed to add water to it to dilute it. Needless to say, it was a very bad experience but now I know better and will never make that mistake again!

Found a poster from the Book of Mormon musical... If you mean that representatives from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are coming, then yes, we are!

This week has been pretty fun. To start off the week, we were out tracting for quite some time (about 3 hours). We were just going around to houses that might have people who were interested in hearing about the gospel. Almost every single one of them either shut the door instantly upon seeing who we were, or they just didn't answer the door. Needless to say, I was getting pretty discouraged. We were just about to got back to our flat for supper when we decided to stop by one last house. When we made it to the building, it turned out to be a flat complex. We rang the buzzer three times, and yet again there was no answer. By the end of that third ring, someone walked out of the complex so we went in through the door they came out. We made our way to one of the flat apartments and knocked on the door. Almost instantly, someone answered. The first thing he did was look at our badges and said "Ahh, followers of Jesus Christ are always welcome here! " Then he invited us in. I was very surprised. We ended up teaching Matthew about the Restoration and how God in His infinite love, has given us prophets on the earth today, to lead and guide us. Overall the lesson went really well and we extended the invitation to read the Book of Mormon and to pray about it. We also scheduled another appointment with him for two days later. When we returned, we followed up with his reading, and he told us he had already read to chapter 8 of the Book of Mormon and that he believed it is from God! We ended up teaching him more about the gospel of Jesus Christ, and told him of the importance of baptism (he was baptised in the Catholic church as a baby), and asked him to be baptised on July 13th. He accepted the invitation! He really has a desire to follow the example of Jesus Christ and is  progressing at a really fast rate!

I can't tell you how much joy it brings to me to see someone else who is trying their best to follow and keep God's commandments. It also goes to show you how people have been prepared by the Lord to receive His gospel. I'm so proud of Matthew and his desire to come closer to the Lord by being baptised.

We also had someone come out to church this Sunday that we couldn't get in contact with all week. When we arrived, he was sitting in the back of the congregation. Honestly, I was so surprised and happy. His name is Henry and I asked him if he would come again next week. He said that he would because it's helping him get rid of his bad habits. I'm very happy for Henry and his desire to change. He makes me want to become better and to become more like the Saviour.

We had a dinner appointment with a member in the ward this Sunday. She is such a wonderful, kind lady. We had roasted potatoes with carrots, roast beef, and boiled cabbage. It was all really good. We ended up sharing a spiritual thought about how everytime you read the Book of Mormon, you get something new from it. We encouraged her to keep reading and to share a scripture with someone else that has helped her.

Mama P's Jamaican stewed chicken and rice.  So yummy!

Eariler, I was reading a General Conference talk from April 2019 titled "Careful vs. Casual". I think a lot of people tend to live the gospel casually, going with the flow, then when hard times come, they flake out. I think that too many of us are living casually and need to start living the gospel with much more care. It is only by living the gospel carefully that we can all endure to the end and receive our goal of eternal life.

Well, I guess my invitation to you this week will be to send a scripture that has helped you to someone whom you think could benefit from it.

Thank you for everything.  I pray for all of you daily.

Cheers,

Love Elder Jakob
